The two figures born on this date operated in very different worlds — one a self-styled mystic who built an international doomsday cult, the other a convicted serial killer who preyed on vulnerable women in Cleveland, Ohio — yet both left behind a substantial count of dead. Joseph Di Mambro co-founded the Order of the Solar Temple, whose mass murder-suicides claimed over seventy lives across Switzerland, Canada, and France in the mid-1990s. Anthony Sowell was found responsible for the deaths of eleven women, their remains discovered on and around his property in 2009. One worked through ideology and orchestrated ritual; the other through concealment and physical violence. The mechanisms differed sharply; the consequences did not.

The women he killed were largely from vulnerable communities, a pattern that investigators and advocates noted had contributed to the delayed recognition of a pattern.
